ABSTRACT
Possibilities for treatment of drug-resistant schizophrenia with positive symptoms
At least 30% of all schizophrenia patients do not demonstrate a sufficient response to antipsychotic treatment, even if the dosages and treatment duration are sufficient. Considering this number, effective options for the treatment of drug-resistant schizophrenia are very much needed. Clozapine, which was discovered 60 years ago, is still the mainstay of treatment in drug-resistant schizophrenia (TRS). Some potential options for clozapine augmentation are also available, of which aripiprazole, amisulpride, risperidone, electroconvulsive therapy and lamotrigine seem to be most effective. The current approach is to minimize the delay before introducing clozapine, as in many patients the features of non-response are present from the very beginning of the schizophrenic process.
