ABSTRACT
High-risk pregnancy – should pregnant women be vaccinated against influenza and pertussis, and when?
In pregnancy, the course of influenza may be marked by more severe symptoms and the onset of complications, often requiring hospital admission, while pertussis is very dangerous particularly to neonates and infants who cannot be vaccinated on account of their age or the presence of contraindications. Flu and pertussis vaccinations are accordingly recommended to all pregnant women. Despite official recommendations in many countries, including Poland, influenza and pertussis vaccination coverage among pregnant women continues to be very low. Furthermore, many doctors are still not knowledgeable enough about the purpose and safety of vaccination in pregnancy. This article sets out to dispel doubts regarding vaccination in pregnant women. The authors provide a rationale for influenza and pertussis vaccination in pregnancy and explain how vaccination against these diseases influences the course of pregnancy and the developing foetus. Possible sequelae of the infections for the mother and the child are presented and research evidence for the safety of these vaccinations is adduced.
