ABSTRACT
Vaccinations in the elderly population
Given that the life expectancy has increased significantly, elderly people in the high-risk group should take special care of their health in terms of vaccinations against certain infectious diseases. According to the WHO recommendations, elderly people should be vaccinated on a regular basis against influenza as well as against other infectious diseases, which only recently have become vaccinable, due to the related risk of infection, e.g. against pneumococcal infections, hepatitis A and B, measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, pertussis and diphtheria. Of the listed infectious diseases, influenza is considered a serious global health threat to the entire human population worldwide due to its antigenic variability. This includes in particular people aged over 65. In terms of the total mortality, influenza and pneumonia are ranked the 6th leading causes of death or the 5th in the elderly population. It is worth noting that complications of any infectious disease should be considered not only in terms of the general health impact but also in terms of the quantifiable costs of healthcare, which are borne by the country.
