ABSTRACT
Skin metastases can occur in up to 10% of patients with internal malignancies. The presence of skin metastases is associated with advanced systemic disease and poor prognosis. However, in one third of cases, identification of skin metastases precedes the diagnosis of internal cancer. In such cases, the location of skin metastases and histological findings may help to find the primary tumor. Thus, it is important for dermatologists to be cautious when examining patients. Early diagnosis of skin metastases can help in establishing a diagnosis and starting appropriate treatment that may prolong patients’ lives. This article presents the epidemiology, clinical picture and approach to the diagnosis of skin metastases of internal tumours.
