ABSTRACT
Chronic migraine due to chronification of episodic migraine
The term ʼchronic migraine' and the earlier concept of `transformed migraine' originated in the 1990s and referred to the phenomenon of migraine `chronification': transformation of episodic migraine associated with non-frequent attacks into chronic migraine associated with frequent attacks, and finally into daily or almost daily headache that is migraine for at least 8 days. The pathogenesis of chronic migraine remains unknown. Certain factors, such as medication overuse, including in particular painkillers, can promote migraine chronification. The incidence of chronic migraine is estimated at 1.5-2% and there is a predominance among women. The transformation of episodic migraine into chronic migraine significantly increases the patient's disability and leads to considerable deterioration of his/her quality of life. Therefore, of crucial importance is to correctly diagnose chronic migraine and to initiate adequate treatment.
