Management of exacerbations of asthma in children under 5 years old

Asthma is the most common chronic lower airway disease in children. While it may develop at any age, most patients experience their first symptoms before the age of 5 years. In view of the different clinical course and limited diagnostic methods, early childhood asthma is a separate and difficult problem in clinical practice.

A risk of asthma exacerbation exists even if the asthma is well controlled. Assessment of severity of an exacerbation is a key element in the diagnostic and therapeutic process, determining further patient management. Accordingly, this article presents criteria for assessing the degree of severity of an asthma exacerbation in children based on Polish and foreign guidelines and an algorithm for the management of a mild and severe exacerbation of asthma in early childhood according to GINA 2020.
