ABSTRACT
Oral hygiene recommendations for infants and small children
The maintenance of oral hygiene is a first step towards prevention, with parent education coming across as a key factor influencing oral health. In infancy, oral health may be too readily ignored as most children are born without teeth and only a few teeth appear in the first year of life. However, infancy is a critical period for the development of healthy habits. Positive habits, such as cleaning teeth with a fluoride toothpaste as soon as the first teeth have appeared, ensure local supply of fluoride. Fluoride is important for tooth remineralisation and so this practice helps strengthen a healthy habit for life. This article discusses oral hygiene recommendations in infants and young children, including home-based strategies and professional products.
