Współczesne leczenie chirurgiczne z powodu nowotworów złośliwych jest ogniwem postępowania wielodyscyplinarnego. Zastosowanie nowoczesnej chemio- i radioterapii indukcyjnej umożliwia zwiększenie odsetka wykonywanych resekcji doszczętnych (R0). Przykłada się dużą wagę do szerszego wykorzystywania technik laparoskopowych jako metod małoinwazyjnych, bezpiecznych, stwarzających mniejsze ryzyko powikłań okołooperacyjnych, a jednocześnie pozwalających na uzyskiwanie wyników porównywalnych z osiąganymi po operacjach klasycznych. W wyspecjalizowanych ośrodkach obwodowe laparoskopowe resekcje trzustki stają się obecnie standardową metodą leczenia chorych na nowotwory trzonu lub ogona trzustki.
