ABSTRACT
Surgical management of bile duct injuries
Bile duct injuries occur most often during emergency operations for acute cholecystitis as well as in the course of other surgical procedures unrelated to the bile ducts. The incidence of intraoperative bile duct injuries during an open cholecystectomy is estimated at 0.1-0.2%, and during laparoscopic surgeries – at 0.2-1.5%.
This paper provides a review of the most important aspects of bile duct reconstruction, including related methods, e.g. the most commonly used Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy and a procedure of an end-to-end anastomosis, as developed by the authors, which uses a cystic duct stump to restore the continuity of the common bile duct.
