ABSTRACT
Diphtheria
Diphtheria is caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, and more specifically by diphtheria toxin secreted by those bacteria. Since the implementation of mass vaccination campaigns in Poland in 1954, a significant decrease in the incidence of diphtheria has been observed. The last case of diphtheria was seen in Poland in 2000. The National Immunization Schedule provides that children should be vaccinated using the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) vaccine (or other combined vaccines) at the age of 2, 3-4, 5-6 and 16-18 months (primary immunization). Subsequently, booster doses should be administered at the age of 6 and 14 years (dTap). The last compulsory booster dose of a 2-valent vaccine (dT) should be administered at the age of 19 years. Adults are recommended to receive booster doses of vaccines against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (dTap) or dT every 10 years to help them maintain an appropriate level of antibodies protecting against infection.
