Abstract
Sexually transmitted infections: selected aspects
Despite the advances in medical knowledge, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to be a major global health issue. The incidence of curable sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) exceeds 1 million cases per day worldwide. This adds up to an alarming number of 376.4 million new infections per year, of which 165 million are new cases of trichomoniasis, 127.2 million – new cases of Chlamydia trachomatis infections, 86.9 million – new cases of gonorrhea and 6.9 – new cases of syphilis among people aged 15-49.
World Health Organization (WHO) recommends using screening tests to suppress the spread of STIs, especially in high-risk populations. Additional actions aimed at stopping a pandemic include promoting diagnostics as well as searching for new therapies and vaccinations. WHO has set a target of reducing sexually transmitted infections by 90% by 2030 as compared to 2016.
Special attention is drawn to pre-exposure prevention which has proved successful in the case of HIV infections. Effective preventive methods for sexually transmitted diseases of bacterial origin are still under development.
Keywords: STIs, syphilis, chlamydiosis, HIV, PreEP, sexually transmitted HCV infections.
