ABSTRACT
Diagnosis of splenomegaly and hypersplenism
The spleen is an organ that performs numerous functions, including immune and hematopoietic functions.
Splenomegaly may be caused by a process that increases normal splenic function (e.g., hemolysis) or may be due to infiltrative, infectious, inflammatory or vascular disorders.
Enlargement of the spleen may cause hypersplenism, which is sequestration and excessive destruction of blood cells by splenic macrophages. Hypersplenism refers to symptoms that include splenomegaly and peripheral cytopenia and can be caused by many diseases, which, in turn, affects the prognosis of hypersplenism.
